Nancy Njau is an accomplished Kenyan accountant and corporate executive who has risen through the ranks to become the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Family Bank, one of Kenya’s prominent financial service providers. Her appointment took effect on January 1, 2024, succeeding Rebecca Mbithi, who held the position from 2019 to 2024.
Born and educated in Kenya, Njau’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in accounting, from Kenyatta University. She further enhanced her qualifications with a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management from the same institution. Her academic pursuits continued at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, where she earned a Master of Business Administration. Njau is also a Certified Public Accountant, accredited by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, and a Certified Executive Leadership Coach. Her commitment to continuous learning is evident from her completion of the Advanced Management Course at Strathmore University in Nairobi.
Njau’s career at Family Bank began in 2002 when she joined as a graduate clerk. Over two decades, she demonstrated exemplary leadership and expertise in various roles within the bank, including Branch Manager, Regional Manager, Head of Retail Banking, Chief Officer Public Sector, and Acting Chief Commercial Officer. Her ascent to the CEO position marks a significant milestone in her career, highlighting her profound understanding of the banking sector and her ability to drive strategic growth.
Her leadership role at Family Bank requires regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), emphasizing the importance and influence of her position within the industry. As CEO, Njau joins an elite group of female executives leading major commercial banks in Kenya, alongside Nasim Devji of Diamond Trust Bank, Betty Korir of Credit Bank, Anne Karanja of Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, and Joyce Ann Wainaina of Citibank Kenya. This illustrious group reflects the progressive strides toward gender diversity in the upper echelons of corporate Kenya.
