Nkumba University (NKU) is a chartered private university in Uganda, accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). Established in 1994 and chartered in 2007, the university has grown into one of the largest private institutions in East Africa, enrolling more than 10,000 students and employing over 300 academic staff.
Location
The university is located on Nkumba Hill in Wakiso District, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Entebbe International Airport, along the northern shores of Lake Victoria. This strategic position places it within easy reach of both Kampala and Entebbe, making it accessible for local and international students.

History
Nkumba University’s roots date back to 1951, when Ssalongo Kintu, together with Charles Kisitu Ffulu and Zefania Mpanga, founded a kindergarten to serve the local community. Over the decades, the institution evolved into a primary, secondary, and vocational school, before becoming Nkumba College of Commerce and Advanced Studies in 1974.
Under the leadership of “Professor” Paul Livisingstone Kisulo Mukasa, the college expanded to offer professional diplomas in business and commerce. In 1994, the Ministry of Education approved its transformation into a full university. On 16 February 2007, Nkumba University was officially granted a charter by the President of Uganda.
Academic Affairs
Nkumba University is organized into seven constituent schools, offering certificate, diploma, bachelor’s, and postgraduate programs:
- School of Business Administration and Information Technology
- School of Education, Humanities and Sciences
- School of Social Sciences
- School of Law and Institute of Criminal Justice
- School of Industrial, Commercial Art and Design
- School of Computing and Informatics
- School of Sciences
The university was among the first in Uganda to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Studies, Mineral Management, and Technology in 2011. A master’s program in the same field is under development.
