Nexus International University (NIU), formerly known as the Virtual University of Uganda (VUU), is a private university in Uganda accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). Established in 2011 and officially admitting its first students in 2012, NIU pioneered online-first higher education in Uganda, making it the first institution in the country to deliver an entire syllabus online. In 2019, it rebranded as Nexus International University to reflect its expanded mission and international outlook.
Location
The university’s main campus is located on Nakaziba Road, Ttamu Division, Mityana Municipality, approximately 6 kilometers west of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The campus occupies Plot 533, Block 124, and provides administrative offices, academic facilities, and ICT-enabled learning spaces. While rooted in Mityana, NIU continues to deliver flexible online programs accessible globally.
History
Founded in 2011, the institution began as the Virtual University of Uganda (VUU), focusing exclusively on online education. The first intake was in January 2012, with programs targeting professionals and learners unable to attend traditional in-person classes.
In 2019, the university rebranded to Nexus International University (NIU), signaling a broader commitment to blending online and physical learning while offering globally competitive academic programs. By 2023, NIU established its permanent campus in Mityana, expanding to include national diploma and certificate programs alongside its existing undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
