Origins and Project Development

The project emerged under the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund, a government-backed initiative focused on improving public infrastructure across the governorate. The new stadium was intended to replace the severely deteriorated Nasiriyah Stadium, a 1960s-era facility that no longer met modern sporting needs.

In 2020, the Ministry of Youth and Sports assumed control of the old stadium site. By 2021, official agreements were signed with Global Sport IQ and Artal Global for both demolition and construction. The design team, led by Omar Waheed and Hawraa Isam, incorporated cultural themes and contemporary techniques to create a modern football venue grounded in history.

Construction Timeline and Challenges

Construction began in March 2022 after the old stadium was demolished. Work moved steadily throughout 2022 and 2023, although minor delays occurred. A significant incident took place in February 2024, when engineering staff were targeted in two gun attacks—events that underscored ongoing regional challenges.

Despite these setbacks, the project advanced consistently. Interestingly, this stadium reached completion before the larger, separate Olympic Stadium of Nasiriyah (planned for 30,000 seats), which has faced far greater difficulties and remains unfinished.

Inauguration and Official Opening

Nasiriyah International Stadium was inaugurated on 20 August 2024 during a visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani. The event marked the official naming of the venue, replacing its temporary construction name: Nasiriyah Local Administration Stadium.

The stadium was immediately designated as the new home of Al-Nasiriya SC, providing the club and its supporters with a modern arena that elevates local football standards.

Architectural Design and Sumerian Symbolism

One of the most striking aspects of Nasiriyah International Stadium is its strong connection to ancient Sumerian culture, a hallmark of the region’s identity. This influence is evident in multiple design elements:

Outer Skeleton of 132 Pillars

The structure is framed by 132 tapered pillars, each shaped to resemble the styluses used by the Sumerians for writing cuneiform. This symbolic reference links the stadium to Nasiriyah’s ancient roots and underscores the region’s role in early human civilization.

Interior Cultural Motifs

Inside the venue, additional Sumerian-inspired features are incorporated throughout the design, blending history with modern sports architecture.

Seating Pattern Representing Fan Sound

The auditorium features white and beige seats arranged in a vertical spectrogram pattern. This design visually represents an audio recording of Iraqi football fans chanting, symbolizing the passion of the national supporter culture.

Stadium Layout and Facilities

The stadium’s seating bowl is single-tiered, although architecturally divided into upper and lower segments for visual effect. All seating areas are fully covered by a contemporary roof system that supports floodlights and two large video screens.

Key features include:

  • A fully covered grandstand
  • A modern main stand with extensive backstage areas
  • A wide glass VIP box for officials
  • An external pavilion featuring a glass façade
  • Integrated lighting and audiovisual systems

These facilities ensure the venue meets modern standards for comfort, broadcasting, and match-day operations.

A New Identity for Nasiriyah Sports

Nasiriyah International Stadium provides a modern home for Al-Nasiriya SC while serving as a symbol of renewal for the city. Its thoughtful blend of cultural artistry and functional engineering makes it one of Iraq’s most unique football stadiums.

The stadium stands as a testament to the region’s ancient heritage and future ambitions, offering a high-quality venue that celebrates local identity while supporting the ongoing growth of Iraqi football.
