Origins and Early Planning
The old Al-Zawraa Stadium was built in 1978 and expanded in 2002, but by 2012 it no longer met the needs of Iraq’s most successful club. As part of a major upgrade initiative, the entire facility was demolished to make room for a new, modern stadium. The project was overseen and financed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, with Iranian company Boland Payeh acting as the main contractor.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 26 January 2012, attended by Iraqi and Iranian officials. Originally projected for completion in 26 months, the stadium was expected to open in early 2014. During construction, Al-Zawraa SC played their home matches at Al-Shaab Stadium.
A Decade of Delays and Adjustments
The early design envisioned a stadium for around 12,000 spectators, but plans were revised during construction to increase capacity to over 15,000. Certain additional facilities—such as a sports hall, swimming pool, and hotel—were removed from the plan due to cost constraints.
Construction faced numerous setbacks, including economic difficulties and disruptions caused by the war against the Islamic State. By 2019, progress resumed, with first seats and hybrid turf installed. Despite the delays, the final cost of IQD 60 billion remained close to the original budget of 55 billion.
After ten years of intermittent work, Al-Zawraa Stadium was completed and inaugurated on 15 February 2022 with a league match between Al-Zawraa SC and Al-Diwaniya SC, ending 2–0.
Architectural Features and Stadium Layout
Al-Zawraa Stadium features a rectangular, football-specific design inspired by classic European stadiums such as those in Nîmes, Genoa, or Porto. Its structure uses four corner blocks to tie the stands together, giving the building a cohesive form.
Key Design Elements
- Single-tier stands, except for the west main stand
- Main stand second tier with VIP boxes
- Covered seating on all four sides
- Hybrid natural turf for optimal playing quality
- Two video screens positioned in the corners
- Under-roof floodlights ensuring high-quality night matches
The first seating rows behind the goals sit notably above pitch level, creating a clear view of the field and a compact, intimate match experience.
Seating and Visual Identity
The stadium features black and white plastic seats arranged in a mosaic pattern. White seats dominate the lower rows, while black seats are positioned higher. In the center of the eastern stand, the seat arrangement forms a distinct “Z” shape, symbolizing the club’s identity.
Externally, the venue is topped with a contemporary façade that gives the building a clean, modern look suitable for international competition.
Importance for Club and Country
As the home of Al-Zawraa SC—holder of the most league titles and cups in Iraqi football—the stadium is central to the club’s legacy and ambitions. Its modern design and facilities also allow it to meet AFC and FIFA requirements, making it capable of hosting international matches.
Located near central Baghdad and the Tigris River, Al-Zawraa Stadium strengthens the city’s sports infrastructure while giving fans and players a high-quality venue that reflects the prestige of Iraq’s most successful football club.
