Early Construction and Opening

The stadium opened in 1987 during a period of increased investment in sports facilities across Iraq. Designed as a multi-use venue, it incorporated a running track, broad stands, and a layout suitable for both football and athletics. With space for 25,000 spectators, it became one of the principal stadiums in southern Iraq.

From the beginning, the stadium was adopted by Naft Maysan SC, who continue to use it as their main home ground for Iraqi Premier League and domestic competitions.

Renovation Plans and Delays

After 2003, plans were created to renovate and modernize the stadium. Intended improvements included upgrades to the VIP section, installation of individual seats for all 25,000 spectators, a new running track, and a roof to cover the stands. Additional enhancements within the stadium complex were also part of the plan.

Although the renovation design was approved early, construction did not begin until 2011. The project soon ran into financial issues, forcing work to stop for several years. This delay left the stadium partly upgraded but far from completion.

Resumption and Reopening

Renovation work restarted in 2016, reviving the project after a long pause. The modified works focused on completing essential upgrades, improving the pitch, installing seats, and rehabilitating internal facilities. Despite these advancements, the planned full roof structure was not finished.

The stadium officially reopened on 22 July 2017, marking the end of a troubled renovation period that stretched over six years. Even without a completed roof, the stadium’s improvements significantly enhanced the spectator experience and general functionality.

Importance to Naft Maysan SC and the Region

As the home venue of Naft Maysan SC, the stadium plays a key role in hosting league matches and supporting the club’s ongoing development. Fans from across Amarah and the wider Maysan Governorate gather here to support their team, making the stadium a central point of sporting life in the region.

The multi-use design also ensures that athletics events and other community activities can still be held at the venue, preserving its status as a versatile public stadium.

A Venue Marked by Persistence

Maysan Olympic Stadium stands as a testament to resilience. Despite several interruptions, financial constraints, and regional instability, the venue has remained functional and continues to serve thousands of supporters. Its story reflects the broader challenges faced by many Iraqi sports facilities, yet it also highlights the determination to maintain community infrastructure and foster local football culture.
