Mastercard Inc. (stylized as MasterCard from 1979 to 2016, and mastercard from 2016 to 2019) is an American multinational payment card services corporation headquartered in Purchase, New York. The company offers a variety of payment transaction processing and related services, including travel-related payments and bookings. Globally, its primary business is processing payments between merchant banks and the card-issuing banks or credit unions of purchasers using Mastercard-branded debit, credit, and prepaid cards. Mastercard has been publicly traded since 2006.

Initially known as Interbank and later as Master Charge, Mastercard was formed by an alliance of several banks and regional bankcard associations in response to Bank of America’s BankAmericard, which later became Visa. Prior to its initial public offering, Mastercard Worldwide was a cooperative owned by over 25,000 financial institutions that issue its branded cards.
