The Marigat-Loruk road closure has been announced by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) following heavy flooding that affected a section of the highway. The flooding was attributed to the fast-rising water levels of Lake Baringo, which have surged due to several days of heavy rainfall over the weekend and earlier this week.
KeNHA urged motorists to avoid the affected road and use alternative routes, including the Loruk-Chemalingot road diversion. The Authority emphasized that the closure is necessary to protect both pedestrians and drivers, warning against attempts to use the submerged section. “We will continue to monitor the situation and advise when the water levels recede. The Authority remains committed to ensuring seamless connectivity to facilitate the safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity,” KeNHA stated.
The closure comes after local residents had raised concerns about the highway being completely cut off due to the rising lake levels. Some residents highlighted additional dangers, warning that the increase in water levels could attract hippos and crocodiles, putting children and other community members at risk. One resident noted, “I live within this area, and going to the shop to purchase things is now a huge problem. Children cannot go to school because of the hippos and crocodiles.”
This flooding incident coincides with a recent traffic disruption notice issued by KeNHA on August 15 for the same route, related to the construction of a box culvert. That disruption was planned to last for six months, with motorists urged to use alternative routes. Now, the Marigat-Loruk road closure due to flooding adds further challenges for commuters and residents in the area.
KeNHA has promised continued monitoring and timely updates for road users. Motorists and local residents are advised to follow official updates and avoid the affected section until the water levels of Lake Baringo recede and it is safe to resume travel.
