Nairobi, Kenya – February 19, 2025: The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has achieved a historic milestone in Value Added Tax (VAT) collection, recording a monthly revenue of Ksh 34.552 billion in January 2025. This marks the highest-ever VAT collection, surpassing the previous record of Ksh 30.636 billion in January 2024.
KRA attributes this exceptional performance to the implementation of VAT Auto-Population of Returns, a digital reform aimed at improving tax compliance and efficiency.
VAT Auto-Population: A Game-Changer for Compliance
Introduced in March 2024, the auto-populated VAT return system pre-fills taxpayer returns using real-time data from iTax, TIMS, eTIMS, and the customs business systems. This automation reduces manual errors, simplifies filing, and enhances tax compliance by integrating multiple data sources.
By replacing manual VAT return preparation with automated data analysis, the system:
✔ Improves filing accuracy
✔ Reduces the burden on taxpayers
✔ Minimizes VAT compliance gaps
✔ Enhances revenue collection efficiency
KRA is also exploring a fully web-based VAT return system and a real-time taxpayer dashboard to further improve transparency, efficiency, and compliance costs.
Sectoral Growth in VAT Contributions
The record-breaking VAT performance was driven by key sectors, notably:
🔹 Energy: VAT remittances from oil marketers surged by 121.6%.
🔹 Manufacturing: Significant growth in VAT contributions from:
- Soft drinks: ↑ 115.6%
- Sugar: ↑ 121.5%
- Beer: ↑ 10.5%
- Tobacco: ↑ 9.5%
- Wines & Spirits: ↑ 12.9%
Exceeding Revenue Targets
KRA exceeded its VAT collection target by Ksh 556 million, achieving a performance rate of 101.6%. This represents a 12.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Implications for Businesses & Taxpayers
🔹 Enhanced compliance: Businesses must adapt to the automated VAT system.
🔹 Lower filing costs: Reduced paperwork means easier, faster VAT processing.
🔹 Greater transparency: KRA’s digital reforms make tax administration more accountable.
With Kenya’s tax policy shifting towards digital transformation, the VAT auto-population system is proving to be a cornerstone of revenue growth and compliance efficiency.
