This article provides an overview of the maternity charges at Kenyatta National Hospital’s (KNH) private wing. KNH, the largest referral hospital in East and Central Africa, is situated on Hospital Road in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The hospital has a capacity of 1,800 beds, employs over 6,000 staff, and includes 50 wards, 22 outpatient clinics, 24 operating theatres (16 specialized), and an emergency department.
The KNH Prime Care Centre (KPCC), formerly known as the Private Wing, offers private healthcare services at affordable rates in line with the government’s cost-sharing policy. The private wing has 224 beds and provides outpatient services, specialist clinics, vaccinations, diagnostic labs, ultrasound services, and a daycare center.
Maternity Charges at Kenyatta National Hospital Private Wing:
a) Normal Delivery
- Cost: Ksh 55,000
- Includes:
- 3-day stay in the general ward, including specialist fees
- Ward procedures and consumables (sanitary pads, basin, towel)
- Labour ward services
- One pediatrician visit
- Initial child immunizations (BCG & Polio) as per the KEPI schedule
- Pain medication during the ward stay and upon discharge
b) Caesarean Delivery
- Cost: Ksh 160,000
- Includes:
- Lab tests (blood grouping, cross-match, hemogram, urea, electrolytes, creatinine)
- 4-day stay in the general ward, including obstetrician fees
- Ward procedures and consumables (sanitary pads, basin, towel)
- Operating theatre services, medication, and anesthesia
- One pediatrician visit, including receiving the baby in the theatre
- Initial child immunizations (BCG & Polio) as per the KEPI schedule
- Pain medication during the ward stay
