Kenya Mourns the Passing of Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, Icon of Women’s Rights and Political Leadership

Kenya is mourning the loss of Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, a revered political trailblazer and fierce advocate for women’s empowerment, who passed away peacefully in her sleep while in North Carolina, United States. Her death, confirmed by her family, marks the end of an era for women’s rights advocacy and political leadership in Kenya.

  • Champion for Constitutional Reform and Gender Equality
  • Tributes from Leaders Across the Nation
  • A Legacy That Transcends Borders

“With heavy hearts, the Asiyo family shares the profound loss of our cherished mother, Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo… Her presence and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her,” the family said in a statement released Tuesday morning.

Born in 1932 in Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County, Dr. Asiyo’s life was dedicated to public service and breaking barriers for women in leadership. Her most prominent political milestone came in 1982, when she became the Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo, making her one of the very few women to sit in Kenya’s National Assembly at the time. She served two terms and was widely respected across party lines for her unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and social development.

Pioneer of Maendeleo ya Wanawake

Dr. Asiyo was one of the founding leaders of Maendeleo ya Wanawake, a grassroots women’s organization that played a critical role in promoting the social, economic, and political empowerment of women in post-independence Kenya. Through her leadership, the organization became a platform for thousands of Kenyan women to participate in community development, political decision-making, and gender equity advocacy.

She was known for her ability to mobilize women in both rural and urban areas, encouraging them to fight for education, health access, and representation at all levels of governance.

Champion for Constitutional Reform and Gender Equality

Beyond parliamentary work, Dr. Phoebe Asiyo was a central figure in the push for constitutional reforms, particularly those related to gender equality. She championed the inclusion of women’s voices in political processes and was instrumental in advocating for the two-thirds gender rule, which later influenced Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

She also served on several national and international bodies, including the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, and worked closely with human rights institutions to amplify African women’s issues on the global stage.

Tributes from Leaders Across the Nation

Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed grief and admiration for her legacy. President William Ruto described her as “a tireless warrior for women’s empowerment whose vision reshaped Kenya’s social fabric.” Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga called her “a fearless voice of truth and a mentor to generations of leaders.”

Hon. Martha Karua, one of Kenya’s foremost female politicians, said, “Phoebe Asiyo opened doors for many of us. Her legacy is one of courage, grace, and unyielding integrity.”

A Legacy That Transcends Borders

Though she passed away far from home, Dr. Asiyo’s influence is firmly rooted in Kenya’s political and social transformation. Her advocacy not only inspired women to rise but also pushed institutions to become more inclusive and representative.

She is remembered not just as a legislator, but as a mother, mentor, and moral compass for Kenya’s evolving democracy.

Plans for her funeral and repatriation are underway, with the family expected to release further details in the coming days.

Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo is survived by her children and grandchildren, who described her as “the heartbeat of our family, a wellspring of wisdom, and an eternal light in our lives.”

Kenya bows in gratitude to a woman whose voice shaped a nation.
