Kenya 2029 World Championships Bid Gains Momentum After Kip Keino Classic Triumph
Kenya is making a renewed push to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, buoyed by the ongoing success of the Kip Keino Classic, now entering its sixth edition on the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold calendar.
A nation globally respected for its dominance in middle- and long-distance running, Kenya is now emerging as a serious contender in the sprints and event hosting—strengthening its place as a track and field powerhouse.
Strong Hosting Track Record
Over the past decade, Kenya has successfully hosted prestigious international events, including the World Under-18 and World Under-20 Championships. With the Kip Keino Classic attracting elite global athletes like Sha’Carri Richardson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Kenny Bednarek, Kenyan officials say the country is ready for the senior global stage.
Athletics Kenya President: Jack Tuwei Confirms 2029 Bid
According to Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei, the country’s bid to host the 2029 World Championships is already in motion. While Kenya lost out on previous bids to host the 2025 edition (awarded to Tokyo) and the 2027 continental event (granted to Beijing), the federation remains optimistic.
“Having the Kip Keino Classic here gives athletes a chance to compete in front of their families and friends. That is why we’ve bid for the 2029 World Championships,” said Tuwei.
Meet Director Barnaba Korir Backs Kenya’s Readiness

Kip Keino Classic meet director Barnaba Korir emphasized Kenya’s ability to stage world-class events, citing consistent turnout from top-tier athletes and the experience from past junior championships.
“It’s proof that Kenya can attract athletes who’ve succeeded globally. The Kip Keino Classic is ranked among the best, and we’re proud of that,” said Korir.
He believes Kenya’s upgraded infrastructure—especially with ongoing stadium renovations—positions the country well to secure both Diamond League status and eventually the World Championships.
A Legacy of Global Events and Rising Facilities
Kenya’s past hosting successes, coupled with its rapidly improving facilities, give the nation a competitive edge. With continued support, officials are confident the 2029 World Championships will land on Kenyan soil—marking a historic first for Africa.
