Jephnei Nyakwama Orina, born in Ogembo, Bomachoge Chache constituency, Kisii County, Kenya, has built a global reputation as a dual-qualified attorney with six academic degrees by the age of 30. His academic journey began at St. Charles & Caroline, Makara Primary School, before proceeding to St. Joseph’s School, Rapogi in Migori County, renowned for academic excellence.
Orina first earned a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from Kisii University, majoring in History and Kiswahili. After graduation, he spent two years teaching under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) before his passion for law redirected his path. A stint as a paralegal at Ochoki & Company Advocates inspired him to pursue legal studies.
In 2018, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) while concurrently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance from Kisii University. His pursuit of excellence led him to the Kenya School of Law, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, qualifying as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Rise in the United States
Determined to expand his legal footprint internationally, Orina relocated to the United States, earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Business Law from Northeastern University School of Law. His academic ambitions didn’t end there — he enrolled at Suffolk University Law School, where he is pursuing a Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D./Ph.D. in Law).
His doctoral research explores child online privacy protection, the right to be forgotten, and data privacy in the AI-driven digital era, positioning him as one of the few African legal scholars delving into the intersection of law and artificial intelligence.
On May 2, 2025, Orina achieved a major milestone by being sworn in as an attorney in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, giving him the unique distinction of dual admission — in Kenya and the United States.
Legal Practice and Expertise
Orina serves as the Managing Partner of his firm’s U.S. office in Boston, Massachusetts. His practice areas include immigration law, family law, corporate law, litigation, and AI and data privacy law — the latter aligning with his doctoral focus.
He works closely with clients in both the United States and East Africa, maintaining partnerships in Nairobi, Kisii, and South Sudan. His brother manages the Nairobi branch, ensuring seamless collaboration between continents.
Speaking to Chams Media, Orina highlighted his commitment to transnational legal cooperation:
“We partner with individuals and businesses in immigration, family law, corporate registration, litigation, and data privacy. My Ph.D. dissertation is on AI and data privacy — it’s a big area we’re investing in.”
Orina also compares the legal cultures of both nations, noting, “The United States and Kenya are quite similar in their litigious nature — over 40 million lawsuits are filed annually in the U.S., with 53% of businesses sued each year.”
Advocacy and Immigration Counsel
Immigration law is one of Orina’s core passions. Drawing from his personal experience, he urges immigrants to maintain legal status and explore legitimate paths such as the National Interest Waiver, designed for individuals with exceptional abilities or advanced degrees.
He often cautions against illegal shortcuts like false asylum claims, emphasizing that “there are legal ways to immigrate that protect your future.” As a Massachusetts-licensed attorney, he practices both state and federal law, giving him authority in matters like immigration and cross-border litigation.
Academic and Political Ambitions
Beyond his legal practice, Orina lectures at Baltimore Technical College and Suffolk University, where he mentors young legal minds. His dedication to education reflects his belief in empowering the next generation of African scholars and professionals.
Politically, Orina’s ambitions are equally bold. At just 29 years old, he sought the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential nomination, calling for youth inclusion in national governance. In 2024, he declared his candidacy for Chairperson of the African Union Commission, running against Kenya’s government-backed nominee Raila Odinga, emphasizing Africa’s median age of 19.7 years as evidence for youth-led leadership.
He has also expressed intentions to run in Kenya’s 2027 presidential elections, positioning himself as a progressive, Pan-African voice bridging continents through legal and political innovation.
Legacy and Vision
Jephnei Orina’s journey from Ogembo to Boston encapsulates resilience, intellect, and global ambition. At just 30, he embodies the modern African professional — deeply rooted in his homeland yet thriving on the international stage. His six degrees, transnational law practice, and commitment to AI ethics and data privacy signal the emergence of a new generation of African leaders redefining global law and governance.
