Mastering how to use a forklift is an essential skill for anyone working in a warehouse, factory, or construction environment. While forklifts are powerful machines designed for heavy lifting, they can be dangerous when operated incorrectly. Driving a forklift safely requires precision, patience, and a clear understanding of basic controls, balance, and safety protocols.

  • Unloading the Forklift
  • Parking the Forklift
  • Professional Tips

Whether you’re a beginner or refreshing your knowledge, this guide will teach you how to handle, load, and park a forklift like a pro while minimizing risks and improving efficiency on the job.

Performing Basic Operations

  1. Climb in and buckle up. Enter the forklift from the left side, using the handholds for support. Always fasten your seatbelt or harness before starting.
  2. Start the engine. Ensure the shifter is in neutral and the parking brake is engaged. Turn the key forward to power up the forklift.
  3. Lift the forks slightly. Raise the tines 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) to prevent scraping the ground.
  4. Release the parking brake. Keep your foot on the brake pedal as you disengage the handbrake.
  5. Select your direction. Push the shifter forward to move ahead, or pull it back to reverse.
  6. Drive slowly. Press the accelerator gently and steer using the wheel knob. Forklifts turn with the rear wheels, so take corners cautiously.
  7. Use your horn. Always honk at intersections and blind spots to alert others nearby.

Loading the Forklift

  1. Approach carefully. Stop about one foot (30 cm) from the load and shift to neutral.
  2. Adjust the tines. Set the fork width to about half the load’s width for balance.
  3. Align fork height. Raise or lower the forks to fit into the pallet slots evenly.
  4. Insert and lift. Drive forward slowly until the forks are fully inserted, then raise the load just a few inches off the ground.
  5. Tilt the mast back. Slightly tilt to stabilize the load before moving.
  6. Secure heavy loads. Strap or shrink-wrap if needed, keeping the heaviest items closest to the forklift’s cab.

Unloading the Forklift

  1. Straighten the mast. Before unloading, return the mast to a vertical position.
  2. Raise the load slightly. Lift about 6 inches (15 cm) higher than the drop area.
  3. Position precisely. Move forward until the load is centered over the destination.
  4. Lower slowly. Set the load down gently until it rests securely.
  5. Reverse carefully. Back straight out without turning until the tines are clear.

Parking the Forklift

  1. Find a level area. Choose a safe, clear location away from traffic.
  2. Lower the forks. Ensure the tines rest flat on the ground to avoid tripping hazards.
  3. Shift to neutral. Pull the parking brake and keep your foot on the brake until it’s fully engaged.
  4. Turn off the engine. Remove the key and exit safely using the three-point contact method—two hands and one foot on the forklift at all times.

Professional Tips

  • Keep your load low and tilted slightly back when traveling.
  • Avoid sudden stops or sharp turns, especially with heavy loads.
  • Always check your surroundings for pedestrians and obstacles.
  • Never exceed your forklift’s rated capacity.
  • Perform daily inspections before use, including tire pressure, fluids, and brakes.

Operating a forklift confidently and safely takes practice, but once you understand the balance, steering, and load control, you’ll be able to move materials efficiently without risking accidents or damage. With proper training and attention to safety, you’ll truly know how to use a forklift like a pro.
