Business Name Search on eCitizen

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for conducting a business name search on eCitizen, the official platform for accessing Kenyan government services.

Important Points to Note Before Doing a Business Name Search

  • Limited Use of Terms: Words like “foundation,” “group,” “project,” “holdings,” “university,” and “trust foundation programs” must be limited or restricted.
  • Prohibited Use of Certain Words: Names with “Kenya” (reserved for government), “ministries,” “organisation,” “welfare,” “association,” or “relief” are not permitted.
  • Prohibited Formats: Names with initials, single words, offensive terms, numerics (except the current year), political terms, or starting with “Kenya” are not accepted.
  • Restrictions: Only one name per application is allowed. Clubs are not registered by the registrar.

Steps to Conduct a Business Name Search on eCitizen

  1. Log in to the eCitizen Portal:
    • Go to eCitizen login page.
    • Create an account if you don’t already have one.
  2. Access Business Registration Service:
    • Navigate to Business Registration Service and click on Get Service.
  3. Make an Application:
    • Click on Make Application to start the process.
  4. Select Name Search Option:
    • Choose Name Search, Business/Company Option from the available options.
  5. Review Instructions:
    • Carefully read the instructions provided on the page to ensure compliance with name guidelines.
  6. Apply for Name Search:
    • Click on Apply Now to proceed with your application.
  7. Choose Business Entity and Enter Name:
    • Select the type of business entity and enter the name you want to search.
  8. Provide a Description:
    • Write a short description of your business or its main activities, then click on Proceed.
  9. Review Application Details:
    • Double-check your application to make sure all details are accurate.
  10. Submit Application:
    • After confirming the details, submit your application.
  11. Make Payment:
    • Pay the Ksh 150 application fee. Choose your preferred payment method, with Mpesa being the most convenient option.
  12. Wait for Response:
    • After making the payment, await a response from the Registrar of Companies. Processing usually takes one business day.

By following these steps, you can efficiently conduct a business name search on the eCitizen platform. This process allows you to verify the availability of your desired business name before proceeding with registration.
