Former Kenyan presidential candidate Mohammed Abduba Dida is currently incarcerated in the United States. Dida, who gained prominence during Kenya’s 2013 presidential race, is serving a seven-year sentence at the Big Muddy River Correctional Centre in Illinois.
Dida was convicted in 2022 on two counts related to stalking and intimidation of an unnamed individual in the US. The first charge of stalking and transmitting threats resulted in a two-year sentence, while the second charge of aggravated stalking and violating a restraining order led to a five-year sentence. His imprisonment began on November 18, 2022, with an expected release date of April 3, 2029.
Recently, Dida filed a court appeal claiming violations of his constitutional rights. In documents dated July 8, 2024, he alleged being denied access to educational programs since May 31, 2022, while at East Moline Correctional Centre. He also claimed inadequate medical attention, citing deteriorating health. However, the court dismissed these claims, citing lack of constitutional grounds.
Dida’s political career in Kenya saw him run for president in 2013 and again in the subsequent election. In 2013, he positioned himself as an alternative to established politicians Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Despite being relatively unknown, his performance in televised debates earned him public admiration. He received 54,840 votes in 2013 and 38,004 votes in the following election, significantly less than the leading candidates.
Dida was known for his memorable quotes during the 2013 presidential debate, including advice about moderation in eating and observations about societal ironies regarding education and practical skills.
