Erias Lukwago Ssalongo (born 11 May 1970) is a Ugandan lawyer and politician, best known as the Lord Mayor of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. He first assumed the office in 2011 and has since been re-elected, serving his third term (2021–2026). Lukwago is widely recognized for his role in Ugandan politics, legal advocacy, and human rights defense.
Early Life and Education
Erias Lukwago was born in Kabungo Village, present-day Kalungu District, to Muhhamoud Mirundi and Salmati Nakayaga. He grew up in a large family with more than 20 siblings.
He pursued law at Makerere University between 1995 and 1997, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. In 1998, he obtained a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. To strengthen his expertise, he later earned a Certificate in Advocacy Skills from the International Law Institute.
Legal and Political Career
After completing his legal training, Lukwago founded Lukwago and Company Advocates, a Kampala-based law firm specializing in constitutional and human rights law.
In 2005, he entered politics, winning a seat in the Ugandan Parliament on the Democratic Party (DP) ticket, representing Central Kampala Constituency. During his time in Parliament, he served on the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee and the Local Government Accounts Committee.
In 2011, Lukwago resigned from Parliament to contest for Lord Mayor of Kampala. He won the election and was sworn in on 20 May 2011. Despite facing political challenges, including an impeachment attempt in 2013, he retained his seat after a High Court ruling.
He secured re-election in 2016 and again in 2021, cementing his role as one of the most resilient political leaders in Uganda’s capital. Lukwago has also served as National Legal Adviser to the Democratic Party and as Shadow Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
On 28 July 2020, he officially joined the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), one of Uganda’s main opposition parties.
Personal Life
Erias Lukwago is married to Zawedde Lubwama Lukwago, and together they have six children, including twins. His family life remains a central pillar of support throughout his political and legal journey.
Legacy
Known for his outspoken political stance, legal expertise, and commitment to accountability, Erias Lukwago has become a prominent figure in Uganda’s governance. His leadership in Kampala, coupled with his legal background, positions him as both a political reformist and a protector of civil rights in the country.
