David Dobie: British Army Officer and Founder of DT Dobie

David Dobie was a distinguished British Army officer and entrepreneur. Born on 21 October 1912 in Tynemouth, United Kingdom, he became widely known for his leadership in the Battle of Arnhem and for founding DT Dobie, one of East Africa’s most successful car dealerships.

Dobie joined the British Army in 1936 and served through the Second World War. At the outbreak of war, he was a lieutenant in the 50th Infantry Division and took part in the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. By 1941, he had been promoted to major and commanded B Company of the 3rd Battalion. He later participated in Operation Torch in Tunisia, earning the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1943 for his bravery.

In 1944, as a lieutenant colonel, Dobie commanded the 1st Parachute Battalion during Operation Market Garden. His unit faced heavy resistance on the way to Arnhem, where he was wounded and captured. However, he escaped German custody and found refuge with the Dutch resistance. Working closely with local fighters, Dobie planned and executed Operation Pegasus I, which successfully evacuated 140 trapped Allied soldiers across the Rhine on the night of 22–23 October 1944. For his courage, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands awarded him the Knight 4th Class of the Military Order of William in 1947.

After the war, Dobie turned to business. He founded DT Dobie, which became the authorized dealer for Mercedes-Benz in East Africa. The company later expanded to include Nissan, cementing its place in Kenya’s automotive industry. His business success added a new dimension to his legacy, showcasing him as both a war hero and a pioneer in regional commerce.

Dobie lived in Kenya with his wife, Rex, and their three children. He passed away on 12 December 1971 in Nairobi at the age of 59. His contributions live on through his military legacy, his role in East African business, and his enduring presence in popular culture.

Dobie’s story has also been told in media. He was portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, where his planning of Operation Pegasus was highlighted.

David Dobie remains remembered as a man of courage, resilience, and vision—both on the battlefield and in the business world.
