Birthplace: Sri Lanka

Profession: Entrepreneur, Businessman, Venture Capitalist

What is Chamath Palihapitiya’s Net Worth? Chamath Palihapitiya, a Sri Lankan Canadian venture capitalist and entrepreneur, has a net worth of $1 billion. He is best known as the founder and CEO of the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Social Capital. Previously, he was the youngest Vice President at AOL, overseeing Instant Messenger, and later a senior executive at Facebook from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, he left Facebook to launch The Social+Capital Partnership, now known as Social Capital, which manages over $1 billion in assets.

Early Life and Education

Background: Chamath Palihapitiya was born on September 3, 1976, in Sri Lanka. At the age of five, he moved with his family to Canada as refugees. To support his struggling family, he worked at Burger King during his teenage years. Palihapitiya graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa at 17 and then attended the University of Waterloo, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering.

Career Beginnings

Early Career: After graduating, Palihapitiya worked as a derivatives trader at BMO Nesbitt Burns. He then moved to California, becoming AOL’s youngest-ever vice president, leading its instant messaging division. In 2005, he joined the venture capital firm Mayfield Fund before moving to Facebook, where he played a crucial role in user growth, helping the platform reach one billion users by 2009.

Social Capital

Founding: In 2011, Palihapitiya founded The Social+Capital Partnership with his then-wife, specializing in funding technology startups. The firm, later renamed Social Capital, has invested in companies like Glooko, SecondMarket, Box, Slack, and Yammer. Despite a decline in operations and top management exits in 2018, Social Capital transitioned into a family office, returning investor capital but continuing to invest in life sciences, biotechnology, climate science, and blockchain technologies.

SPACs

Involvement in SPACs: Palihapitiya is known for sponsoring SPACs (special purpose acquisition companies). In 2019, he helped Virgin Galactic go public and later took Opendoor, SoFi, and Clover Health public through SPACs. Despite criticism for promoting risky reverse-mergers, he remains active in the SPAC space.

Political Activity

Donations and Initiatives: Palihapitiya has donated to both major US political parties, primarily supporting the Democratic Party. In 2013, he founded the lobbying group FWD.us to improve education, foster technological innovation, and reform immigration policy. In early 2021, he briefly considered running for California Governor but decided against it.

Investments and Donations

Key Investments: Palihapitiya is a minority investor in the Golden State Warriors, part of the group that bought the team in 2010 for $450 million. He has also invested in several startups through Embarcadero Ventures.

Philanthropy: Palihapitiya has donated generously to the University of Waterloo, including a $25 million contribution to the engineering department. He also donated $7 million to provide clean drinking water to families in California’s Central Valley.

Personal Life

Family: While in college, Palihapitiya met Brigette Lau, whom he later married and had three children with. The couple divorced in 2018. He is now in a relationship with Italian model and pharmaceutical heiress Nathalie Dompe, CEO of Dompe Holdings, and they have one child together.
