Atemi Oyungu, born Carol Atemi Oyungu, is a celebrated Kenyan Afro-soul, R&B, and jazz singer, songwriter, and actress. With a career spanning over two decades, she is known for her soulful voice, emotive performances, and her role in shaping Kenya’s contemporary music scene. Atemi’s artistry blends African rhythms with neo-soul and jazz, making her one of the most versatile vocalists in East Africa.

Early Life and Education

Atemi Oyungu was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, where her love for music began early. At the age of 10, she joined the junior choir at Nairobi Baptist Church, sharpening her vocal skills and passion for performance.

After completing secondary school, she joined United States International University (USIU) in 1996, where she co-founded the singing and dance group Karisma, which performed at university events and concerts. In 1998, alongside fellow artist Natasha Gatabaki, Atemi co-formed the band INTU, beginning her professional journey in Kenya’s vibrant music scene.

Music Career

Atemi’s professional breakthrough came when she began working with renowned Kenyan producer Tedd Josiah at Sync Sound Studios. With INTU, she gained recognition before venturing into her solo career.

In 2003, Atemi joined Eric Wainaina’s band as a backing vocalist, further cementing her reputation in the Kenyan music industry. She released her debut single, Happy, in 2004, followed by her acclaimed debut album Hatimaye in 2008. The album featured soulful hits like He is Here and Imenibamba (with Eric Wainaina).

Her sophomore album, Manzili (2013), showcased her maturity as a songwriter and performer, including collaborations with artists like Chris Adwar and Delvin Mudigi. Songs such as Usijali, Someday, and Nairobi received critical praise for their powerful storytelling.

Atemi has also released notable singles such as Sunny Day (2014), Moyo featuring Tanzanian star *Lady Jaydee (2015), Bebi Bebi (2015), and Romantic featuring Kenyan hitmaker *Nameless (2018).

She has collaborated with leading East African artists including Nikki, Lady Jaydee, Nameless, Eric Wainaina, Chris Adwar, and Delvin Mudigi, solidifying her status as one of Kenya’s most respected vocalists.

Beyond her own music, Atemi also served as the music director for the sixth season of Tusker Project Fame, working alongside producer Tim Rimbui. She also hosted the sixth season of Africa Rising, a platform showcasing Africa’s rising music talent.

In addition to her music, Atemi has acted in productions such as Tinga Tinga Tales (2010), Lefty (2008), and Sean (2008), demonstrating her versatility as a creative artist.
