Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium is a major modern sports venue in Basra and the new home of Al-Minaa SC. Officially inaugurated on 26 December 2022, the 30,000-seat stadium reflects both Iraq’s football ambitions and the city’s deep maritime heritage. Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium was designed by 360 Architecture and built by Anwar Soura General Contracting Company after a long construction process shaped by conflict and economic challenges.

Origins and Early Development

The project for Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium began in spring 2011. It started with the demolition of the club’s old ground, a modest 1930s-era venue last renovated in 1995. At the time of demolition, the old stadium seated around 10,000 spectators. The new stadium’s design relocated the pitch slightly eastward while dramatically expanding the scale and ambition of the facility.

Designed by the American firm 360 Architecture, the new venue aimed to establish a modern home for Al-Minaa SC—one of Iraq’s oldest and most successful clubs. The team achieved national prominence by winning the 1977–78 league title, becoming the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi championship.

Initially, the stadium was also intended for use in the 2013 Gulf Cup, which Iraq was slated to host. This event was to be a major milestone in Iraq’s sporting recovery after years of war.

Delays and Construction Challenges

Despite ambitious plans, construction slowed considerably due to political instability, the rise of the Islamic State, and economic constraints. By 2013, the project had virtually halted. The Gulf Cup was postponed multiple times, reflecting the country’s difficulty in hosting major international tournaments.

Years later, conditions improved and work resumed. The stadium was finally completed in late 2022, more than a decade after construction began.

Inauguration and Pre-Gulf Cup Opening

The grand opening took place on 26 December 2022. The ceremony honored the Al-Minaa SC squad that won the national league in 1978. The highlight of the event was a friendly match between Al-Minaa and Kuwait SC, ending 2–1 for the visitors.

The stadium reopened just in time for the long-delayed Gulf Cup scheduled for January 2023. Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium hosted six group-stage matches, while Basra International Stadium hosted the remaining games and the knockout phases.

This marked Iraq’s long-awaited return to hosting a major regional football tournament after nearly a decade of postponements.

Stadium Architecture and Unique Features

Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium sits prominently in Basra’s city center and features a classic athletics-track layout. The oval single-tier stands curve around the track, rising highest along the touchlines and descending toward the ends. Seating is arranged in blue and white plastic chairs, reflecting both club colors and the maritime character of Basra.

Two large video screens are positioned above the seating arches. The west stand houses essential facilities including boxes, media areas, and team amenities.

A Roof Inspired by the Sea

The stadium’s most recognizable feature is its distinctive roof. Supported by 48 steel masts distributed around the venue, the roof structure consists of repeated curved PTFE membrane segments. These sweeping, wave-like shapes evoke the movement of the Arabian Gulf and reflect Basra’s identity as Iraq’s principal port city.

The result is a stadium that not only meets modern functional standards but also expresses architectural symbolism tied to Basra’s coastal heritage.

Significance for Basra and Iraqi Football

Al-Minaa Olympic Stadium represents a major investment in Iraq’s sports infrastructure and a new chapter for Al-Minaa SC. Its design, seating quality, and fan experience position it among the country’s finest stadiums. The venue strengthens Basra’s role as a sporting center and offers a high-quality environment for both domestic football and international matches.

By successfully hosting part of the 2023 Gulf Cup, the stadium helped restore Iraq’s standing in regional football after years of instability. Its architecture, symbolism, and modern amenities make it a key landmark in the city.
