Abdi Mohamed (born 1970) is a Kenyan banker and corporate executive, currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Absa Bank Kenya PLC. He is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s banking sector, known for his leadership, innovation, and strategic vision.
Early Life and Education
Mohamed pursued his higher education at Kenyatta University, where he graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He later advanced his academic credentials by earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in International Business from Edith Cowan University in Australia.
To enhance his leadership skills, Mohamed attended IMD Business School in Switzerland between 2019 and 2021, where he completed intensive Management and Leadership courses. These programs strengthened his capacity to lead large projects and complex financial operations.
Career in Banking
Mohamed’s career spans more than 15 years in banking, with a strong focus on operational excellence and consumer banking. He began his professional journey at Barclays Bank, where he rose through the ranks to become Regional Head of Islamic Banking in East and West Africa.
In 2008, he was appointed Consumer Banking Director, overseeing product development and customer service operations. He later advanced to Chief Operating Officer (COO), a role he held until April 2016. His tenure as COO positioned him as a critical strategist in operational transformation and digital banking adoption.
From 2020 to 2023, Mohamed served as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Absa Bank Tanzania, where he implemented reforms that boosted customer confidence and improved financial performance. His success in Tanzania set the stage for his elevation to lead the Kenyan subsidiary.

In 2023, Mohamed was appointed CEO and MD of Absa Bank Kenya. Under his leadership, the bank has seen significant growth and strengthened its position in Kenya’s highly competitive banking industry.
Within a year of his leadership, Absa Bank Kenya reported a 29% increase in profit after tax, climbing to KSh10.7 billion in the first half of 2024. This performance highlighted Mohamed’s ability to drive profitability while maintaining a focus on customer-centric innovations.
In recognition of his contributions, he received the African Brand Leadership Award 2024 for his role in building the Absa brand across the continent.
