Mac Jones is heading back to the background in San Francisco — and he is embracing the role without hesitation. After carrying the San Francisco 49ers through eight games in Brock Purdy’s absence, Jones was informed this week that Purdy is healthy enough to return as the starter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan took the unusual step of calling Jones into his office to personally thank him for keeping the team’s season alive.
Shanahan Praises Jones for Stabilizing the Season
Shanahan is not known for sentimental gestures, but he made an exception after watching Jones guide the team to a 5–3 record during Purdy’s recovery from turf toe. Speaking on his KNBR-680 radio segment, Shanahan said Jones understood the situation from the start and never needed reassurance.
Jones’ reaction reflected the professionalism he has shown since arriving in San Francisco. According to Shanahan, Jones told him he enjoyed the opportunity and was ready to jump back onto the scout team until needed again.
Shanahan made it clear that Jones’ contribution cannot be overstated. Without him, the 49ers might have been out of playoff contention by midseason.
Purdy Returns With Gratitude
Purdy worked with the first team in Friday’s media window and was removed from the final injury report. The 49ers’ starting quarterback has missed six consecutive games, and eight of the past ten, due to toe, shoulder, and previous elbow issues.
He acknowledged how significant Jones’ performance was in keeping the offense functioning.
“He played extremely well and kept our team alive,” Purdy said. “I appreciate everything he’s brought to this team.”
With Purdy earning $265 million and expected to carry the franchise deep into the postseason, the 49ers begin their stretch run on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.
Jones Finds Renewal in San Francisco
For Jones, this season represents a career reboot after difficult years in New England and Jacksonville. Instead of viewing his return to backup status with frustration, he sees it as a chance to rediscover the enjoyment of the game.
He signed a two-year contract with the 49ers rather than a one-year prove-it deal like Sam Darnold, who parlayed his backup experience into contracts elsewhere. Jones says he has no regrets.
“I wanted to get back to having fun playing football,” he said last week. “This is a good organization with coaches and players who believe in each other. I’ve been fortunate to be here.”
Jones has completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions during his run as starter. Beyond the numbers, Shanahan values his command of the system and his similarities to Kirk Cousins — cerebral, poised, and consistent.
The 49ers Are Unlikely to Let Jones Leave
Given Purdy’s injury history and San Francisco’s past quarterback turmoil, the 49ers are expected to keep Jones through 2026 unless a team offers significant draft capital. The franchise learned hard lessons in 2022 when injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo left them without a capable alternative in the NFC Championship Game.
Jones’ reliability gives the 49ers insurance that did not exist in previous seasons. If Purdy’s toe becomes an issue again, Jones can step back in with confidence and support from the locker room.
Offensive Reinforcements Arriving With Purdy
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is also expected to return after missing six games with a PCL strain. His injury occurred in the same Week 4 contest that sidelined Purdy. Before the setback, Pearsall had emerged as the team’s top deep threat with 20 receptions for 327 yards.
Pearsall says the recovery took longer than he hoped, especially given the demands on receivers who rely on quick cuts. Jauan Jennings welcomed his return, calling him a player who lifts the team’s energy and draws defensive attention.
A Healthy Roster Sets Up a Crucial Stretch
Aside from a calf strain to cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, the 49ers’ injury report is unusually clean. With Purdy healthy, Jones ready as a dependable No. 2, and key offensive weapons returning, San Francisco enters the final seven games positioned for a playoff push.
The organization knows firsthand how critical quarterback depth can be. With Jones embracing his role and Purdy returning with renewed momentum, the 49ers have stability that could pay dividends deep into the season.
