This innovative card allows MTN MoMo subscribers to perform secure online transactions without the need for a physical card or a bank account.

Uganda has witnessed significant growth in digital financial services, with mobile money transactions soaring to Shs 191 trillion in the 12 months leading to June 2023, marking a 23% increase from the previous year, according to the Bank of Uganda. Speaking on the launch, Jemima Kariuki Njuguna, Chief Product Officer at MTN MoMo, highlighted how the Virtual Card by MoMo aligns with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy. She stated,
“The Virtual Card by MoMo is a major milestone in our journey towards MTN’s Ambition 2025, which focuses on promoting financial inclusion and economic empowerment across Africa. By offering a secure and convenient way to access online services, we enable our customers to engage more actively in the digital economy.”

Similarly, Muhammad Nana, Senior Vice President, Digital Partnerships at Mastercard, emphasized the impact of the initiative, saying,

With this collaboration, we are enabling millions of Ugandans to transact securely and conveniently, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic development.”
