Verizon has recently announced a significant price increase for its smartwatch connectivity plans, which allow smartwatches to receive calls and texts independently of a phone. The monthly fee for keeping a smartwatch connected to Verizon’s network is set to rise from $10 to $15 starting June 3, 2024. This adjustment represents a 50% increase in cost, a substantial jump for consumers accustomed to the previous rate.
In a communication to customers, Verizon explained that the price change is necessary to continue enhancing their industry-leading network and services. The revised $15 monthly fee will not only maintain the smartwatch’s connection but will also include expanded benefits such as unlimited calling, texting, and data within, and between, Canada and Mexico for plans using the number share feature.
While the new rate takes effect in a little over a month, giving users some time to enjoy the current lower price, it’s important to note that additional taxes will apply to the increased plan, potentially raising the cost further. For those who already benefit from discounts on their smartwatch line tied to specific phone plans, these discounts will continue to apply under the new pricing structure, somewhat cushioning the blow of the hike.
However, for customers looking to opt out due to the increased cost, limitations may apply, especially if there is an outstanding balance owed on the watch, which could compel them to continue paying for the service.
The price increase, while seemingly small at an additional $5 per month, is indicative of a broader trend in the tech and service industry where incremental price hikes can cumulatively lead to a significant rise in monthly expenses over time. This change underscores the ongoing challenge for consumers managing their digital and connectivity budgets.
