Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU) is a private university in Uganda, located in Fort Portal City, Kabarole District. With a foundation rooted in law and professional studies, UPU has established itself as a center of academic excellence, offering degree programs that nurture ethical leadership and professional competence.
History
The university traces its origins to the Grotius School of Law and Professional Studies, founded in 2001 in Mengo, Kampala. Initially, it operated as part of another institution before moving towards independence.
In 2004, the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) advised the school to seek its own license. After legal clarification, UPU was officially licensed as a fully independent university on 9 August 2005. This recognition marked the beginning of its journey as a stand-alone higher education provider.

The main campus of Uganda Pentecostal University is situated in Muchwa Complex, Fort Portal City, about 320 kilometers west of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. Its location in the Western Region provides academic opportunities to students from Fort Portal, Kasese, and surrounding districts. The campus lies just 1 kilometer off Kasese Road, making it accessible to the urban population while maintaining a serene learning environment.
Academics and Programs
Uganda Pentecostal University is licensed by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and offers a variety of academic programs. It began with a focus on law and legal studies, later expanding into business, education, and social sciences.

Governance
The university is governed by respected figures in Uganda’s academic and legal circles. The Chancellor is Justice Hon. Ruby Aweri Opio, while the Vice-Chancellor is Professor John Ntambirweki, an experienced scholar and administrator. Student Body
As of 2021, Uganda Pentecostal University had about 1,000 students enrolled across its faculties. Despite its modest size compared to other Ugandan universities, UPU emphasizes quality over quantity, focusing on personalized learning and close student–lecturer engagement.
