The EU strongly resisted President Donald Trump’s tariff threats. However, hours later, Trump backed down after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. On Wednesday, European Parliament members blocked a vote on a significant US-European trade deal. This decision came after Trump threatened to impose up to a 35% tariff on countries opposing his Greenland ambitions.
Trump’s initial threat was to impose the tariffs, which were set to go into effect on February 1, 2026. However, after discussions with Rutte, Trump announced the cancellation of the tariffs. He stated that a “framework of a future deal” concerning Greenland and the Arctic region had been formed. Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, accused the US of breaching the trade agreement signed last summer.
