Talanta Sports City AFCON 2027: Government Confirms Timely Progress Ahead of Key Deadlines
Kenya’s flagship stadium project, Talanta Sports City, is taking shape rapidly as the country prepares to host two major continental football events—CHAN 2025 and the AFCON 2027. The project, led by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), broke ground in March 2024 and is expected to be completed between December 2025 and April 2026.
PS Elijah Mwangi Leads Site Inspection
A joint inspection on May 20, 2025, led by Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Forestry PS Gitonga Mugambi, and officials from the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), confirmed that significant milestones have been achieved at the Ngong’ Road-based facility.
Key Construction Highlights
- Curtain walls fully installed, enhancing weather protection and visual appeal
- Tier 1 and Tier 2 skeletal structures completed
- Presidential suite, VIP, VVIP, and media zones now under partitioning
- Canopy roofing underway, with some sections already complete
- Third tier slabbing ongoing to overcome minor delays
- Main player tunnel beams installed and structure taking shape
The stadium’s 3,500-strong workforce—working in day and night shifts—is helping maintain the tight project timeline.
AFCON 2027 and CHAN 2025 Preparations
Talanta Sports City is a cornerstone of Kenya’s commitment to delivering world-class sports infrastructure after jointly winning the bid to host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The facility is also crucial for the rescheduled CHAN 2025, now set for August 2–30, 2025.
In addition to Talanta Sports City, other key venues undergoing upgrades include:
- Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani
- Nyayo National Stadium
- Ulinzi Sports Complex
- Police Sacco Stadium
- Kasarani Annex
- Kirigiti Stadium
The government has confirmed that hosting fees have been paid and all venue preparations are actively ongoing.
Multi-Ministerial Support and Environmental Concerns
President William Ruto, during a previous visit in April 2025, emphasized a multi-ministerial approach to fast-track development, acknowledging that elements like transport and forestry fall beyond the Sports and Defense ministries.
Inclusion of Forestry and KURA in the latest tour signals a broader collaboration, including upgrades to transport links that may require controlled expansion into Ngong’ Forest.

Conclusion
With visible structural progress and cross-sector coordination, Kenya is firmly on track to meet CAF standards and host both CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027. Talanta Sports City is set to be a game-changer in African sports infrastructure and a symbol of Kenya’s growing ambition on the continental stage.
