Ahmed Omar Mandela CJ’s Restaurant Success Story: From Banker to Hospitality Mogul
The entry of CJ’s Restaurant into Nairobi’s food scene in 2018 marked a major shift in the Kenyan hospitality industry. Behind this success is Ahmed Omar Mandela—also known as Hajji Omar Mandela—a Ugandan businessman who turned his vision into a thriving East African restaurant empire.
From Banking to Business: Mandela’s Early Journey
Born in 1958 in Kampala, Omar Mandela studied economics at Makerere University and began his career in banking. But his entrepreneurial spirit soon took over. In 1983, he founded the Mandela Group of Companies, starting with a hardware store and gradually expanding into tyre trading, car lubricants, and fuel stations.
As customer demand grew, he identified a new opportunity: food services at fuel stations, which led to the birth of his now-famous restaurant business.
The Birth of Café Javas in Uganda
Mandela launched Café Javas (CJ’s) under the Mandela Group with the idea of serving quality, affordable meals to motorists and middle-class Ugandans. Strategically placed next to City Oil petrol stations, Café Javas quickly became known for:
- Generous food portions
- Diverse, well-curated menus
- Excellent customer service
Today, Café Javas operates nine branches—eight in Kampala and one in Entebbe—cementing its place in Uganda’s food and hospitality industry.
Expansion to Kenya: From Café Javas to CJ’s Restaurant

Mandela’s dream to expand into Kenya faced early challenges. A legal dispute with Java House over trademark concerns forced him to rebrand from Café Javas to CJ’s Restaurant.
In April 2018, CJ’s officially launched its first branch on Koinange Street in Nairobi, offering a fresh, stylish, and premium dining experience. The brand resonated instantly with Kenya’s urban crowd.
CJ’s has since expanded to five locations, including:
- Nairobi CBD (Koinange Street)
- Kilimani
- The Waterfront Mall (Karen)
- Village Market
- Imaara Mall
With over 300 menu items, CJ’s has become a go-to spot for families, professionals, and food lovers.
Mandela Group of Companies: A Business Empire
Beyond CJ’s, Omar Mandela’s business portfolio spans several key sectors:
- Mandela Millers – Supplies wheat and maize to CJ’s and the Ugandan market
- City Tyres – Uganda’s largest tyre company
- City Oil – A fuel company with ultra-modern filling stations in Kampala
- Mandela Auto Spares – A top automotive spare parts distributor
- City World – Distributes fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG)
The Mandela Group of Companies employs over 5,000 people, making it one of the largest private-sector employers in Uganda.
Leadership in Sports
In November 2021, Mandela was elected President of SC Villa, one of Uganda’s most successful football clubs—further demonstrating his influence beyond business.
Conclusion: A Visionary Entrepreneur Changing East Africa’s Food Industry
Ahmed Omar Mandela’s journey from economics graduate and banker to hospitality mogul is a story of vision, resilience, and innovation. His ability to identify untapped markets—like fuel station dining—transformed into a multi-industry business empire. Today, CJ’s Restaurant stands as a symbol of East Africa’s evolving dining culture, driven by one man’s entrepreneurial dream.
