T-Mobile has officially acquired Ka’ena Corp, bringing Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile under its wing. This move, approved by the FCC, expands T-Mobile’s portfolio with these budget-friendly service providers. Here’s what customers can expect following this change:
Continued Brand Independence but Under New Management Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile will continue to operate as separate brands, but now under T-Mobile’s management. T-Mobile has committed to keeping the pricing competitive and plans to enhance the product offerings available to Mint and Ultra customers.
Easier Device Unlocking A significant immediate benefit for customers of Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile is the updated device unlocking policy. Previously, devices from these providers were locked for 12 months, but now, following the acquisition, the unlocking period has been reduced to just 60 days after full payment. This change aligns with T-Mobile’s existing policy and was implemented at the urging of consumer groups and the FCC.
No Pricing Freeze Guarantee Unlike the three-year price freeze that followed T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint, no such guarantee accompanies this deal. A Mint representative assured last year that the acquisition would not impact pricing; however, customers remain wary given T-Mobile’s history of introducing hidden fees and nudging customers towards more expensive plans during the Sprint pricing freeze.
Security Concerns Both consumer groups and privacy advocates have expressed concerns about T-Mobile’s security practices, especially given its history of data breaches—nine since 2018. With Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile now part of T-Mobile, any future security issues could potentially impact a broader customer base. It’s noteworthy that Mint Mobile itself has faced security challenges, with two significant breaches since 2021.
Finalizing the Deal The acquisition deal, valued up to $1.35 billion in cash and stocks, is set to be finalized on May 1st. Ryan Reynolds, who owns approximately 25% of Mint and has been a prominent figure in its marketing, will continue his creative involvement with the brand.
As T-Mobile integrates Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile into its operations, customers of these budget carriers will be watching closely to see how their services and pricing evolve under new management.
