Stadion Lukas Enembe, located in Jayapura, Papua, is a significant multi-purpose stadium in Indonesia. Officially opened in 2019, the stadium is a key landmark in Papua, serving as a major venue for sports events and the Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON), a national sporting event held every four years. With a seating capacity of 40,263, the stadium is not only the largest in Papua but also designed to host international competitions, including FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Design and Architecture

The Lukas Enembe Stadium is designed with modern architecture to suit international standards. The stadium sits on 13.7 hectares of land and covers 71,000 m² of floor space. It features an innovative design that combines aesthetic appeal with functional sport infrastructure.

The stadium’s roof spans 30,000 m² and covers four distinct stands, each connected solely by the roof structure, creating a smooth circulation path for spectators. The stands include two-tiered sections along the sides and single-tiered sections at the curves.

One of the stadium’s most unique features is its decorative façade, which is designed with 50 perforated triangular ‘sails’, inspired by Papuan craftsmanship. These sails not only add a cultural touch to the stadium’s appearance but also serve to enhance ventilation and create a distinct visual identity for the venue.

Stadium’s Capacity and Facilities

Stadion Lukas Enembe can host 40,263 spectators, with seats arranged to provide unobstructed views of the playing field. The athletics track, which surrounds the main football pitch, is suitable for various athletic events, making it a multi-use venue.

Additionally, the stadium’s training facilities include indoor arenas, swimming pools (natatorium), and other sports amenities. These features make the stadium a central hub for training and development of athletes in the region.

Construction and Development

Construction of the Lukas Enembe Stadium began in late 2016 and was completed in May 2019. The project was financed with a budget of IDR 1.3 trillion (approximately $95.3 million). The funding came from a combination of the Papua provincial budget and national funds through the special autonomy fund.

The stadium was officially opened in 2019 and is named after Lukas Enembe, the former governor of Papua, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the development of the region. The stadium was built to serve as the main venue for the 2020 PON, which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key Events Hosted

Stadion Lukas Enembe has already hosted several important sports events, including:

  1. 2020 Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON): The stadium was the main venue for this major national sports competition, which brings together athletes from across Indonesia.
  2. FIFA U-20 World Cup (2023): The stadium is one of the venues for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, marking its international recognition as a world-class venue.
  3. Local Football Matches: The stadium is home to the Persipura Jayapura football team, and it regularly hosts Liga 1 football matches and friendly international games.

Future Prospects

The Lukas Enembe Stadium is not only an important venue for Papua, but it also plays a crucial role in the development of sports across Indonesia. The stadium’s facilities, modern design, and strategic location make it a potential host for international events, including football World Cup qualifiers, Asian Cup matches, and international athletics competitions.

Conclusion

Stadion Lukas Enembe is a modern and multifunctional stadium that represents the growing sports infrastructure in Papua and Indonesia as a whole. With its capacity to hold over 40,000 spectators, state-of-the-art facilities, and unique design elements, it stands as a landmark in Jayapura, offering a venue for major sports events and future international tournaments.
