How to Use Splitwise

Splitwise

Splitwise is a convenient app that simplifies tracking, sharing, and settling group expenses. Here’s a guide to help you get started:

  • Method 1: Creating Your Account
  • Method 2: Adding Friends and Creating a Group
  • Method 3: Adding Expenses
  • Method 4: Settling Up
  • Method 5: Understanding Fees
  • Method 6: Using the Fairness Calculators
  • Method 7: Using Splitwise Pro

Method 1: Creating Your Account

  1. Navigate to Splitwise: Visit the sign-up page on a computer for smoother setup. After signing up, you can switch to the mobile app.
  2. Introduce Yourself: Enter your name, email, and password. Click “Sign me up!”
  3. Group Setup: If you know the name of the group you want to join, add it now or skip this step for later.

Method 2: Adding Friends and Creating a Group

  1. Add Friends: Click “Add friends on Splitwise” to add people via Gmail or other email services. Once connected, they will appear in your “friend dashboard.”
  2. Create Groups:
    • On the website: Click your name (top-right), then “Create a new group.”
    • On iPhone: Tap “Groups,” then “Start a group.”
    • On Android: Tap the three dots (top-right), then “Create a group.”

Method 3: Adding Expenses

  1. Add a Bill: Click the group name, then click “Add bill.” Provide details like the total amount, payer, and who owes what.
  2. Include Additional Details: Add notes, photos, or adjust the date if adding a previous expense.

Method 4: Settling Up

  1. Initiate Reimbursement: Click “Settle Up.” Choose cash, Venmo, PayPal, or Paytm to reimburse.
  2. Choose When to Pay Back: Pay immediately or at the end of each month. Records will remain for later reference.
  3. Simplify Debts: Use “Simplify debts” to minimize payments within groups. Activate this feature in group settings.

Method 5: Understanding Fees

  1. No Splitwise Fees: The app itself doesn’t charge for PayPal, Venmo, or Paytm, but partners may impose their own fees. For example, Venmo charges 3% for credit card payments.

Method 6: Using the Fairness Calculators

  1. Rent Calculator: Input rent and details of each room to distribute rent fairly.
  2. Travel Calculator: Fairly split travel costs by considering attendance and stay duration.
  3. Noise Calculator: Compensate neighbors for noise disturbances.
  4. Guest Calculator: Calculate rent contributions for longer couch stays.

Method 7: Using Splitwise Pro

  1. Upgrade to Pro: For $3/month, you get ad-free use, receipt scanning, itemization, and default split settings. Try Pro free for one week.

By following these steps, you can easily track, share, and manage group expenses using Splitwise!
