You can send money from Kenya to South Africa on your mobile through various international money transfer services such as Mukuru, WorldRemit, Western Union, and MoneyGram. These services offer transfers to bank accounts or for cash pickup in South Africa, as direct transfers to mobile money accounts are not a standard option for this specific corridor.

Using Mukuru

Mukuru offers fast and affordable money transfers to South Africa, primarily for instant cash collection at their branches or partner locations.

  1. Download the Mukuru App from your app store and sign up.
  2. Create your money transfer order within the app, specifying South Africa as the destination.
  3. Select “Cash Collection” as the receive method.
  4. Pay for the transfer using a Kenyan bank transfer, debit, or credit card.
  5. Share the reference number with your recipient in South Africa so they can collect the cash with a valid ID.

Using M-PESA Global via Western Union

M-PESA Global, in partnership with Western Union, allows you to send funds for cash pickup at numerous agent locations across South Africa.

  1. Opt in to M-PESA Global via the My Safaricom App or by dialing *334# and following the prompts.
  2. Open the M-PESA App or dial the USSD code and select “M-PESA Global”.
  3. Choose “Western Union Location” as the receiving method.
  4. Enter the recipient’s full name (exactly as it appears on their ID document), destination (country code ZA), and the amount.
  5. Input a secret word, which the recipient will need for collection in South Africa.
  6. Confirm the transaction details and enter your M-PESA PIN.
  7. Share the provided tracking number (MTCN) and the secret word with the recipient.

Using Other Mobile Transfer Providers

  • WorldRemit: This service offers transfers directly to South African bank accounts. You can download the WorldRemit app, select the bank transfer option, and enter the recipient’s bank details.
  • MoneyGram: The MoneyGram app also facilitates cash pickups at their agent locations in South Africa.
  • Wise: Wise offers electronic transfers using the mid-market rate with low fees, allowing you to send money to bank accounts in South Africa via their app or website.

Always compare exchange rates and fees before sending money to ensure you choose the best service for your needs.
