You can send money from Kenya to Eritrea on mobile using major international money transfer apps like Dahabshiil, MoneyGram, and WorldRemit, as well as through partners of M-PESA Global. Direct mobile money wallet transfers (like M-PESA to an Eritrean service) are not widely available, so transfers typically involve cash pickup or bank transfers.

Using Dedicated Money Transfer Apps

These third-party apps facilitate transfers to bank accounts and cash pickup locations in Eritrea.

  • Dahabshiil: Offers secure and low-cost online transfers to Eritrea, with options for cash pickup at agent locations or eWallet deposits. You can download the Dahabshiil App to send money.
  • MoneyGram: Facilitates transfers to thousands of cash pickup locations or directly to bank accounts in Eritrea via their MoneyGram App.
  • WorldRemit: Enables transfers to bank accounts or cash pickup locations in Eritrea. You can use the WorldRemit App to check availability and specific receive methods.
  • Chimoney: Allows sending money to Eritrea using a phone number or email address, with the recipient receiving a redeem link to their bank account.

Using M-PESA Global with Partners

You can use your M-PESA balance to fund transfers through M-PESA’s international partners like Western Union, allowing the recipient to collect cash at an agent location in Eritrea.

Via the M-PESA App or USSD

  1. Access the M-PESA Global service on the M-PESA App or by dialing *334#.
  2. Select a partner that serves Eritrea, such as Western Union.
  3. Choose the option for cash pickup and enter the recipient’s details (full name as it appears on their ID document, phone number).
  4. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost.
  5. Confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN and share the resulting Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) with the recipient so they can collect the cash in Eritrea.

Recipients in Eritrea generally receive funds in Eritrean Nakfa (ERN) or USD to their bank accounts or via cash pickup. Always compare exchange rates and fees across different providers to find the most cost-effective option for your transfer.
