General Francis Ogolla was a distinguished Kenyan military officer who served as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Kenya. His career was marked by a series of significant appointments and achievements, reflecting his commitment and expertise in military operations and leadership.

Early Life and Education

General Ogolla was a well-educated military officer, holding degrees from notable institutions. He graduated with a Diploma in International Studies and Military Science from Egerton University. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Armed Conflict, and Peace Studies with First Class Honors, and a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi. Additionally, he was a graduate of École Militaire de Paris and the National Defence College of Kenya.

Military Career

General Ogolla had a long and illustrious career in the Kenya Defence Forces. Before his appointment as the Chief of Defence Forces in April 2023, he served as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. His leadership spanned various capacities within the Kenya Air Force, where he rose through the ranks to become a Major General and was appointed as the Commander of the Kenya Air Force on July 15, 2018.

His other notable roles included Deputy Commander at Kenya Air Force, Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, and Commanding Officer of Tactical Fighter Wing. He was also involved in training and staff roles such as Chief Flying Instructor at the Kenya Air Force Flying Training School and Operations Desk Officer at Kenya Air Force Headquarters.

International Service

General Ogolla’s expertise was not confined to national duties; he also served internationally in the former Yugoslavia as an Observer and Military Information Officer from 1992 to 1993. His international experience played a crucial role in shaping his perspective on global military operations and peacekeeping.

Leadership and Legacy

As Chief of Defence Forces, General Ogolla emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among the military forces. His leadership motto was “one force, one mission,” aiming to foster a unified approach to national defense. He was committed to working closely with other security agencies within a multi-agency framework to ensure the safety, security, and stability of Kenya for sustainable economic development and prosperity.

Personal Life

General Ogolla was married to Aileenn Ogolla and was a father and grandfather. His hobbies included reading and playing golf, reflecting his interests beyond his military commitments.

Tragic End

General Ogolla’s career and life tragically came to an end when he died in a helicopter crash in Kaben, Marakwet East, on a Thursday in 2024. His death was a significant loss to the Kenya Defence Forces and the nation, given his vast contributions to the military and national security.
