Stadium History and Upgrades

Pocari Sweat Stadium first opened its doors in May 1971, serving as a multi-purpose venue for both athletics and football. Initially, the stadium had a smaller seating capacity, but with its growing popularity, especially due to the football matches, it underwent a series of renovations to enhance its capacity and facilities.

In 1992, the stadium received its first major upgrade with the installation of lighting masts, making it suitable for evening football and other events. The following renovations in 2004 further improved the stadium, ensuring it met the standards required for J2 League play. In 2013–2014, a new covered stand was added to replace the grass-covered slope on the east side, improving the overall fan experience. The final major renovation took place in 2015 when a new roof was added to the main stand, completing the stadium’s transformation into a modern sports venue.

Home to Tokushima Vortis

Tokushima Vortis, the J2 League football team, has been the primary tenant of Pocari Sweat Stadium since 1994. The stadium serves as the home ground for the team, providing a compact and fan-friendly environment for matchdays. The stadium’s seating is divided between covered areas and open stands, with plastic chairs in the covered sectors and benches in the other areas.

In 2013, Tokushima Vortis achieved a historic milestone by securing promotion to the J1 League, becoming the first club from Shikoku Island to reach Japan’s top-tier football league. This achievement added further significance to Pocari Sweat Stadium as the heart of football in Tokushima.

A Venue for Athletics

In addition to football, Pocari Sweat Stadium also serves as a venue for athletics events. It features a tartan athletics track, and in 1993, the stadium hosted the 48th National Sports Festival, showcasing its dual-purpose design. The stadium continues to support athletics competitions, hosting regional and national events.

Naming Rights and Sponsorship

Since 2007, Pocari Sweat Stadium has carried the name of the popular isotonic drink brand, Pocari Sweat, due to a naming rights agreement. The sponsorship deal has provided additional funding for the stadium, allowing it to maintain and upgrade its facilities. The stadium was previously known as Tokushima Naruto Stadium and Kanko Stadium before securing the Pocari Sweat naming rights deal.

Features and Amenities

Pocari Sweat Stadium boasts several modern features, including floodlights in the corners of the stadium and a large video screen on the southern curve. The stands are equipped with plastic chairs in the covered areas, providing fans with comfort during matches. The main stand has a roof covering part of the seating, and the east stand also benefits from a roof extension. These additions make the stadium more comfortable for fans, ensuring they are shielded from the elements during matches.

The stadium is part of a larger sports complex in Naruto, which includes an auxiliary stadium with a running track, a baseball stadium, tennis courts, and sports halls. This multi-purpose complex makes Pocari Sweat Stadium an integral part of the local sports scene.

Access and Location

Pocari Sweat Stadium is located in the city of Naruto, in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The stadium is easily accessible by public transport, with shuttle buses available for matchdays. It is situated in a larger sports complex, providing ample facilities for visitors.

The location of the stadium, just a short distance from the city center, ensures that fans and athletes can easily access the venue for both football and athletics events.

Legacy and Future

Pocari Sweat Stadium has become a staple in the sports culture of Tokushima, hosting a variety of events and serving as the home for Tokushima Vortis. The stadium’s continued success and improvements ensure that it will remain a key venue for sports in the region for years to come. With its modern facilities, rich history, and strong community support, Pocari Sweat Stadium is poised to remain a major part of Tokushima’s sporting landscape.
