José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal (born April 2, 1975) is a Chilean-American actor who achieved worldwide recognition for his performances in television and film. After years of minor roles on stage and television, Pascal broke out as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones (2014) and Javier Peña in Netflix’s Narcos (2015–2017).
He later earned international stardom portraying Din Djarin in The Mandalorian (2019–2023) and Joel Miller in The Last of Us (2023–present). His performances, often linked to father-figure archetypes, earned him both critical and popular acclaim.

Pedro Pascal was born in Santiago, Chile, to child psychologist Verónica Pascal Ureta and fertility doctor José Balmaceda Riera. His family fled Chile during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, seeking asylum in Venezuela before later relocating to Denmark and eventually the United States.
Raised in San Antonio, Texas, and later Orange County, California, Pascal pursued acting at the Orange County School of the Arts before earning a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1997.
He began using his maternal surname Pascal as a tribute to his mother, who died during his youth.

Early Work (1999–2013)
Pascal appeared in minor roles in television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, and Homeland. Alongside stage work, he struggled financially, often supported by close friend Sarah Paulson.
