The cybersecurity community is sounding alarms after an alleged data breach affecting over 200 million users of X (formerly Twitter) surfaced online.
Discovered by SafetyDetectives’ Cybersecurity Team, the breach reportedly includes a publicly available 34GB .CSV file filled with sensitive user information — and it’s making waves far beyond the dark web.
📁 What Was Leaked?
Though no passwords were exposed, the file allegedly contains:
- User IDs
- Full names and screen names
- Email addresses
- Location, bio, and profile URL
- Language & time zone preferences
- Follower/following counts
- Account verification status
- Account creation date
- Last activity info
The danger lies in the valid email addresses, which open the door to phishing and social engineering attacks.
🌐 Where Was It Found?
Unlike typical leaks buried in the dark web, this file was freely available on a popular open forum known for distributing hacked datasets. With just a registered account, anyone could access and download it — raising concerns of mass exploitation.
🚨 Why It’s a Serious Threat
Even without passwords, the leak enables cybercriminals to:
- Launch phishing emails disguised as X or other services
- Execute targeted scams using bio, language, and activity data
- Perform social engineering attacks by impersonating trusted sources
The breach also intensifies concerns over X’s data security practices, especially under Elon Musk’s leadership since his acquisition in October 2022.
🔐 How to Protect Yourself
If you’re an X user, take these steps immediately:
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for stronger login security.
- Avoid clicking suspicious links or replying to odd messages.
- Update your X privacy settings to hide sensitive information.
- Monitor account activity for unusual login attempts or changes.
- Use unique, strong passwords even if passwords weren’t leaked.
- Report phishing attempts to X support immediately.
🗣️ What’s Next?
While X has not officially confirmed the breach, cybersecurity experts are urging users to act quickly. The incident rekindles the ongoing debate around social media data transparency, user privacy, and platform accountability.
With over 201 million records potentially exposed, the X user data breach could become one of the largest public leaks in recent memory.
Stay cautious, stay informed — and secure your digital presence.
