Adjumani District Uganda – Location, Population, and Economy

Mukono District Uganda is one of the most strategically located and fastest-growing districts in the Central Region. The district headquarters are in Mukono Town, situated just 21 kilometers east of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The area serves as a vital commercial and residential hub, with strong ties to both rural and urban economies.

Over the decades, Mukono has grown into a vibrant district with a population of nearly 600,000, supported by agriculture, trade, and tourism. Its proximity to Lake Victoria and the historic Sezibwa Falls makes it one of Uganda’s top cultural and natural attractions, while its fertile soils and favorable climate sustain diverse farming activities.

Location and Geography

Mukono District is bordered by:

  • Luweero District to the northwest

The district covers 1,875 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level. Mukono Town lies on the Kampala–Jinja Highway, linking it to Jinja’s Nalubaale Power Station and Uganda’s broader economic corridor.

Tourism and Cultural Heritage

1. Lake Victoria
Mukono enjoys access to Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second largest freshwater body. The lakeside areas host leisure sites, water sports, and fishing communities, making them key attractions for both domestic and international visitors.

2. Sezibwa Falls
One of Uganda’s most famous natural and cultural sites, Sezibwa Falls is located 35 km east of Kampala and just 19 km from Mukono Town. Rising seven meters high, the falls are steeped in Baganda cultural myths, believed to have been born by a woman centuries ago.

The site includes:

  • Over 100 bird species and rare monkeys
  • Cultural artifacts, including caves, sacred rocks, and century-old trees
  • Recognition as an official cultural site of Buganda Kingdom

Sezibwa Falls combines natural beauty with cultural depth, attracting both tourists and cultural pilgrims.
