Makoma is a vibrant musical ensemble known for blending Christian, pop, R&B, and dance genres. Originating from Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as Zaire), the group later established itself in the Netherlands. The band consists of six siblings: Nathalie Makoma, Annie Makoma, Pengani Makoma, Tutala Makoma, Duma Makoma, and Martin Makoma, along with Patrick Badine, who is not a family member. The group’s music features a mix of languages, including Lingala, French, Dutch, and German.
Nathalie Makoma, a prominent figure in the group, departed in 2004 to pursue a solo career. She gained significant attention in 2007-2008 when she finished as the runner-up in the Dutch edition of Idols. During the finals, she performed “Ola Olé” with her siblings, which was a major hit for Makoma.
In 2012, Makoma made a notable comeback with the album “Evolution,” which included ten new tracks. The album marked a fresh chapter for the group, albeit without Nathalie, who had decided to focus on her solo endeavors since 2006.
Career Highlights
Makoma was initially founded by Tutala Makoma in 1993, with the group beginning public performances in 1995 under the name “Nouveau Testament” (New Testament). Due to political unrest in their homeland, the family relocated to the Netherlands and later to Germany before finally settling in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1996. The band’s name was changed to Makoma, reflecting their family name, after moving to Europe. They began recording at Westcoast Studios, a facility owned by Tutala Makoma in Rotterdam. Within the group, Annie Makoma is responsible for designing their stage attire, and Martin Makoma serves as the choreographer.
The band’s debut album, “Nzambe Na Bomoyi,” was released in 2000, followed by “On Faith” in 2002. The same year, they won the prestigious Best African Group award at the Kora African Music Awards. Makoma’s music has taken them on tours across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and Canada, solidifying their international presence.
Nathalie Makoma, born on February 24, 1982, in Kinshasa, has carved out a successful solo career. After leaving the group, she settled first in England and then in Ireland. Nathalie released her solo albums “On Faith” in 2003 and “I Saw the Light” in 2005. Her return to the Netherlands in 2007-2008 saw her participate in Idols 4, where she finished as the runner-up, narrowly losing to Nikki Kerkhof. During the Idols final, the Makoma group made a guest appearance, performing “Ola Olé” alongside Nathalie. Nathalie is currently signed with Sony BMG.
