Situated in Machakos County, the school has grown significantly over the years, evolving from a small Government African School to a well-respected institution known for its academic excellence and extracurricular activities.
Originally founded as a Primary School for boys, the school transitioned into a mixed institution in 1946, only to become an all-boys school again in 1950. Machakos School History
Machakos School was established in 1915 under the name Government African School, primarily to provide primary education to boys in the region. By 1946, the school had evolved into a mixed institution. However, in 1950, the school split, with the boys remaining in Machakos School and the girls moving to what became Government African Girls Intermediate School.
From its early years, the school focused on providing quality education, which included agricultural and vocational training. Over time, the curriculum shifted to accommodate a more comprehensive academic program. By 1989, Machakos School adopted the 8-4-4 system of education, which allowed for a more structured approach to education, including secondary schooling with the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Today, Machakos School has grown from a three-streamed school to a ten-streamed institution, offering a wide range of subjects. Over the years, the school has produced more than 17,000 students, contributing significantly to Kenya’s education system.
