Kanga High School is a prestigious national boys’ secondary school located in Rongo, Migori County, Kenya. Established in 1985 by the late Hezekiah Oyugi, the school has grown from humble beginnings to become one of Kenya’s leading academic institutions. Known for its exceptional performance in national exams, particularly in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Kanga High School is considered a powerhouse in South Nyanza.

Kanga High School History

Kanga High School was founded in 1985 with the vision of providing quality education to boys from the surrounding regions. The school began with an enrollment of only 36 students and operated in a temporary setup at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rapogi, before moving to its permanent location in early 1986. The first principal, the late Joram Ayoo, came from Starehe Boys’ Centre and played a key role in shaping the school’s early academic direction.

In 1988, the school rose to national prominence, ranking sixth nationally in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) exams. This early success cemented Kanga’s reputation for academic excellence. Over the years, the school expanded its facilities, with new dormitories, classrooms, and staff quarters being constructed.

Kanga High School was officially upgraded to national school status in 2012, solidifying its position among the top national schools in Kenya.

Kanga High School KCSE Performance

Kanga High School has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. In 2024, the school presented 485 candidates, with more than 90% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

The 2024 KCSE results included:

  • 22 students who scored a straight A.
  • 76 students who achieved an A-.
  • 135 students earned a B+.
  • 119 students scored a B.
  • 75 students attained a B-.

Further down the grade spectrum:

  • 29 students scored C+.
  • 16 students scored C.
  • The lowest grade recorded was a D+, attained by only one student.

The school posted a mean score of 9.29854 in the 2024 KCSE exams, a testament to its commitment to academic excellence.

Kanga High School Fees

Kanga High School falls under Cluster One (I) of Kenya’s national schools as per the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines. The official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh 75,798. However, actual fees may vary slightly depending on additional charges for uniforms, motivational programs, co-curricular activities, and other student-related costs.
