The Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) that are permitted in Kenya are listed below. An organization that is subject to regulations that owns, maintains, and permits investments in real estate is known as a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). In Kenya, REIT registration and regulation are handled by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA).
Investing in a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) entitles you to dividend payments, which are a fraction of the trust’s properties’ revenues. Through REITs, anyone may make real estate investments without having to manage or own the assets.
Three main types of REITs In Kenya:
- Development Real Estate Investment Trusts (D-REITs): This is a type of REIT in which investors pool their capital together to acquire real estate to undertake development and construction projects and associated activities.
- Income Real Estate Investment Trusts (I-REITs): This type of REIT focuses primarily on generating income from real estate properties such as office buildings, shopping centres, apartments, hotels, or industrial complexes. Their primary goal is to generate a steady stream of income for investors through rental payments or lease agreements.
- Islamic Real Estate Investment Trusts: These REITs only undertake Shari’ah-compliant activities.
