Founded in 1991 as the Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology, the university began by focusing on creative and vocational training. The university has faced global controversies. In 2020, it was criticized for a billboard in Malaysia portraying founder Lim Kok Wing as the “King of Africa,” which many considered racially insensitive. It later issued an apology and removed the billboard.
LUCT campuses in Lesotho, Sierra Leone, and Botswana have also faced investigations over accreditation, labor disputes, and contract disagreements. Despite these challenges, the respective governments clarified the university’s legitimacy, with several disputes resolved through regulatory bodies.
