African Bible University Uganda (ABU) is a private Christian university located on Lubowa Hill, Wakiso District, about 12 km south of Kampala. It was founded in 2005 by African Bible Colleges with the mission to provide quality higher education from a Christian perspective to Uganda and the surrounding region.
History and Foundation
The university is the third institution established by African Bible Colleges in Africa. The first was founded in Liberia in 1975, followed by Malawi in 1991, and later Uganda in 2005. ABU was established by Dr. JW Chinchen, a missionary and educator who envisioned training leaders grounded in both biblical knowledge and professional skills.
Since its founding, the institution has positioned itself as a center for Christian leadership and education, serving not only Ugandans but also students from South Sudan, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Central African Republic.
Location
The ABU campus occupies 30 acres of land on Lubowa Hill, overlooking Lake Victoria. It sits just 2 km east of the Kampala–Entebbe Road, making it easily accessible from both Kampala and Entebbe International Airport. The serene location provides a quiet, academic environment ideal for theological studies and leadership training.
Academics
The university offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies. This program is paired with a minor specialization in one of the following fields:
- Business
- Communications
- Christian Education
This curriculum is designed to prepare students not only as pastors, teachers, and missionaries, but also as leaders in business, education, and media who can integrate biblical values into professional practice.
Significance
African Bible University Uganda plays a unique role in higher education in East Africa. Unlike secular universities, ABU emphasizes spiritual formation, Christian ethics, and servant leadership alongside academic learning. Its graduates contribute to church leadership, education, media, and business sectors, making it a vital institution for both Christian ministry and national development.
Conclusion
Since 2005, African Bible University Uganda has grown into a respected institution for Christian-based higher education, drawing students from across East and Central Africa. With its strong focus on biblical studies, leadership training, and professional development, ABU continues to fulfill its mission of preparing servant-leaders who can transform society through faith and knowledge.
