Kyankwanzi District Uganda is the westernmost district in the Central Region, forming part of the Buganda Kingdom but bordering the Bunyoro sub-region. Established in 2010 after being carved from Kiboga District, Kyankwanzi has developed into a hub for farming, cattle-keeping, and timber production. It also holds historical significance as the cradle of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) during the Ugandan Bush War, making it both an economic and political landmark.
The district headquarters are based in Butemba Town, though the district derives its name from Kyankwanzi Town, which hosts the famous National Leadership Institute.
Location and Geography
Kyankwanzi District is bordered by:
- Nakaseke District to the east
- Kiboga District to the southeast
- Mubende and Kibaale Districts to the southwest
- Hoima and Masindi Districts to the north
The district covers an area of 2,455.3 km² and lies at an elevation of about 1,200 m (3,900 ft) above sea level. It consists of lush forests, prairies, and grazing lands, forming part of Uganda’s cattle corridor. Butemba, the administrative hub, is about 160 km northwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
History and Administration
Kyankwanzi District was established by an Act of Parliament in July 2010, carved out of Kiboga District. The creation addressed the long distances residents traveled to access administrative services.
- It has two counties: Butemba and Ntwetwe.
- Historically, it was part of Bunyoro before being annexed by Buganda during the late 19th-century conflicts.
- The district is strongly associated with the NRM, as it was a strategic base for President Museveni during the Bush War.
Population and Demographics
Kyankwanzi has experienced rapid population growth:
- 1991 Census: 43,500 residents
- 2002 Census: 120,600 residents
- 2012 Estimate: 182,900 residents
The district is ethnically diverse, attracting migrants from across Uganda due to available land and fertile soils. Communities include Baganda, Banyoro, Banyankole/Banyarwanda cattle-keepers, Basoga, Bagisu, Bakiga, and Congolese refugees. Most residents are bilingual.
Economy
Kyankwanzi’s economy is anchored in agriculture and livestock, supported by timber and charcoal production.
Key activities:
- Crop farming: maize, beans, groundnuts, rice (NERICA varieties), cassava, sweet potatoes, millet, sorghum, pineapples, and tobacco.
- Cattle-keeping: especially Ankole cattle, with major cattle markets in Kapeke, Kyankwanzi, and Nsambya.
- Forestry: timber and charcoal provide tax revenue, though deforestation is a concern.
A notable investment is Global Woods AG, a German forestry firm with a 50-year license to operate tree plantations in Kikonda Forest Reserve. The project produces timber and carbon credits, though it has raised land rights and environmental controversies.
