Kiboga District Uganda is a rural administrative unit in the Buganda Region of Central Uganda, with its headquarters located in the town of Kiboga. Established in 1991, it has grown steadily in population and importance, largely due to its agricultural base and its position along the major Kampala–Hoima highway, which connects Uganda’s capital to the country’s emerging oil and petrochemical industry hub in Hoima.
The district plays a crucial role in supporting Uganda’s agricultural economy, with the majority of residents engaged in farming and related rural livelihoods.
Location
Kiboga District is bordered by:
- Nakaseke District to the northeast and east
- Mityana District to the south
- Mubende District to the southeast
- Kyankwanzi District to the northwest
The district headquarters are approximately 120 kilometres northwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. The district sits at an elevation of 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) above sea level.
Overview and Administration
Kiboga District was officially created in 1991, having been carved from the larger Mubende District. It is largely rural, with scattered settlements and farming communities.
In 2010, the district was split, creating Kyankwanzi District from its western part, leaving Kiboga East County as the only county in the district.
Its strategic importance is boosted by the highway linking Kampala to Hoima, facilitating trade, transport, and future oil-related development.
Population
Kiboga’s population growth reflects steady rural development:
- 1991 Census: 98,200 residents
- 2002 Census: 108,900 residents
- 2012 Estimate: 165,100 residents
The population density is estimated at 104 persons per km².
Economy
Kiboga’s economy is dominated by agriculture, with an estimated 80% of the labor force employed in farming and animal husbandry. Subsistence farming remains the backbone, though the highway connection supports small-scale trade and transport businesses.
Major crops include bananas, cassava, maize, beans, and groundnuts, which serve as both food staples and market crops.
