Luweero District Uganda is a historically significant district in the Central Region, best known as the site of the Luweero Triangle, the epicenter of the NRA Bush War during the 1980s. The district, with headquarters in Luweero Town, lies about 75 km north of Kampala, making it both a commuter hub and an administrative center.
With a population of over 458,000 (2014 Census), Luweero has developed into an agricultural and educational hub while preserving its historical and cultural landmarks. It is a district that blends Uganda’s turbulent past with steady growth in farming, education, and trade.
Location and Geography
Luweero District is bordered by:
- Nakasongola District to the north
- Kayunga District to the east
- Mukono District to the southeast
- Wakiso District to the south
- Nakaseke District to the west
The district covers an area of 2,217.6 km² and includes urban centers like Bombo, Wobulenzi, Bamunanika, Ziroobwe, Kalule, and Busiika.
History and Administration
- Formerly larger, Nakaseke District was carved out of Luweero in 2005.
- The district is historically tied to the Bush War of 1981–1986, where thousands perished. This legacy remains central to Uganda’s political history.
- Today, Luweero hosts military, cultural, and educational institutions, reflecting its strategic importance.

Agriculture is the backbone of Luweero District Uganda, with 85% of residents engaged in farming. Main crops include:

- Groundnuts
- Pineapples
Livestock farming is also practiced, while the proximity to Kampala supports trade and markets for agricultural produce.
