In the heart of Vihiga County, about 3 kilometers from Luanda town along the C38 Kima–Ebusakami Road, rises one of Western Kenya’s most striking geological wonders — the Kima Stone Mountain. This photogenic heap of angular boulders, carved by time and nature into near-perfect geometric forms, has fascinated geologists, travelers, and photographers alike. Often described as a “perfect-angled tump,” the mountain resembles an artful tower of cubes and blocks that seem almost man-made, yet entirely natural in origin.
The surrounding landscape tells a broader story of Vihiga’s ancient geology. The county sits atop the Basement System, composed mainly of foliated quartz and feldspar-rich rocks, relics of an era when sedimentary layers were transformed under immense geological pressure. Across Vihiga, these processes produced dramatic piles of rocks and granite outcrops, but few are as captivating as Kima Stone Mountain. Its sharp angles, balanced formations, and lush vegetation growing between cracks create an otherworldly spectacle that is both aesthetic and mysterious.
Around Kima, the terrain changes — the surrounding hills are dotted with aspherical, cannonball-like boulders, scattered in disarray as though tossed by some ancient force. Adventurous visitors can scramble up the stone mountain, following a twisting natural stairway to its summit. From the top, sweeping views stretch across the Bunyore and Maragoli Hills, revealing the rugged beauty of Vihiga’s countryside. The Kima Facility Center, located nearby, offers a glimpse into the area’s community development projects, including a small fish hatchery that supports local livelihoods.
Despite its breathtaking beauty and geological intrigue, Kima Stone Mountain remains underdeveloped as a tourist site. The area lacks structured county tourism plans that could transform it into a major attraction alongside Bunyore Hills and Mungoma Cave. Even so, its raw, untouched charm continues to draw curious travelers eager to experience one of Kenya’s most remarkable natural sculptures.
