Kima Church of God: The Singing Church

Nestled 4 kilometers east of Luanda town, just off the Kisumu–Busia Road along the Ebusakami–Kima Road, the Kima Church of God stands as one of Vihiga County’s most historically significant religious landmarks. With its bold red façade, roughcast texture, and twin 40-foot towers, this century-old church embodies the fusion of Christian faith and African tradition that shaped the early spiritual life of Western Kenya.

Founded in 1905 by Robert Wilson, a South African missionary inspired by a vision to bring the gospel to Bunyore, the Kima Church of God quickly grew into a hub of both worship and community transformation. It earned the affectionate moniker “The Singing Church” for its remarkable choral performances — harmonies that blend traditional Luhya rhythms with Christian hymns, producing one of the most enchanting sounds in Kenyan worship. During services, the church’s walls echo with soulful indigenous melodies, a testament to its enduring cultural and spiritual legacy.

The church’s musical influence extends beyond its walls. The nearby Bunyore Girls High School Choir, often performing in collaboration with the church, has repeatedly triumphed at Kenya National Music and Drama Festivals, captivating audiences with their disciplined and emotive performances. The Christian Broadcasting Hope organization even operates a local studio and broadcast center at Kima, ensuring the church’s musical and spiritual messages reach communities across the region.

Kima Church’s lasting importance lies in its role as a symbol of religious syncretism — the blending of Christianity and indigenous Luhya belief systems. Initially, early missionaries sought to suppress local traditions, but over time, the community’s resilience and spiritual creativity gave rise to a unique faith expression that embraced both worlds. The result was a thriving, distinctly African Christianity that acknowledged ancestral wisdom while upholding Christian teachings.

Today, visitors to Kima Church of God are drawn not just by faith, but also by its architectural charm, rich history, and melodious worship experience. Whether you’re religious or simply a lover of culture and heritage, this “Singing Church” offers a rare glimpse into Kenya’s spiritual evolution, where harmony between tradition and modernity continues to ring true.
